The only way to do great work is to love what you do.
Steve Jobs
In the year 2014, I went to the neighboring country of Malta which is another lovely Mediterranean country to live in, Cyprus. I left my job in one of the biggest companies in my country in exchange for finding what is truly for me.
I started working as a housemaid at a 5 bedroom house with a big swimming pool. The couple at that time had a baby boy whom I also needed to take care of; aside from cleaning the house, washing clothes, cooking. In other words – I worked all around for the salary of 350 Euro.
Looking back, it wasn’t anyone’s dream, however that was the only option I had to earn more and to start a new life.
I remember one day, while I was cleaning the yard, I was looking around thinking if someone was seeing me and I felt so ashamed of myself doing a cleaning job instead of working in an office, in front of the computer, typing, and being seen as one of the best employees. But then I realized, there is nothing wrong with being a cleaner, being a nanny or being a housemaid, however you may call it. After all, to leave your country for a greener pasture is awesome!
I learned that, not everyone gets to experience the same privilege as I did. I was able to do an all-around job, making the child happy, making my employers happy as they see their son laughing and learning new songs. The best part was that I was able to provide a better life for my kids back home.
I taught myself to persevere, be grateful, see good things about everything and be joyful. I taught myself to love my employer/s with all my heart, be sincere in whatever I was doing: serving them, and be truthful. Ultimately, I was rewarded.
Whatever I have now is because God sees my heart. That reward came only from my Creator.
